Title: When Your Life Becomes Reality TV
Author: drugabuse.com
Text Type: Article
Date Finished: 31/8/17
Summary
This article is about a man from Philadelphia overdosing on a packed bus before being administered Narcan while being streamed live.
Personal Response
This article shows that drugs can affect you at anytime in any place. It says " a young man in Philadelphia is videotaped shooting up and falling off his seat on a overcrowded bus", Then the video cuts to a police officer administrating him Narcan which is an antidote. We that this is a terrible problem soon made worse because the video quickly went viral after the Police tweeted the video. This links to people in New Zealand who don't care if they do drugs in public because this has been seen with those people at a park in the North Island who have passed out due to a drug and one person is laying on the ground with foam coming from his mouth.
This article also shows us that the media does not care about embarrassing people by posting these videos and pictures of drug use on the news and photos in the paper. For example "I get treated like a second class citizen", says one person because of a long-held stereotype that portrays chemical dependency as a moral failing. We see this because only a few months ago on News hub they showed a video of two guys who had passed out on a bench with a bong in one guys hand and a packet of drugs on the bench. This a very disturbing video to post on the news which some kids watch, it is showing them terrible images of what affects drugs can have on a person and in some cases children witness the effects of drugs and alcohol on a daily basis. This links to the New Zealand Media because they have done the exact same thing as the Police in America posting a video of a person using drugs and reacting just like in the last 6 months the New Zealand media have posted to explicit videos of drug use their was they one about the guys at a playground and their was also a video uploaded about a young mother who is high on the new zombie drug and we were clearly shown that their are baby toys and equipment surrounding her and I wouldn't be surprised if she has used these drugs or been on them in the presence of her child/children. This is exposing her kid to self inflicted drug harm and this could lead to abuse to the child and could lead to physical and mental scars or it could impact the child's future because the child could be addicted to drugs or could be to scared to interact with people which would be hard for the child to get a job especially if it involves social skills.

Title: Noughts & Crosses
Author: Malorie Blackman
Text Type: Novel
Date Finished: 31/8/17
Summary
Noughts & Crosses is a book about slavery and human rights but they have put a spin on it by having the Black people(Crosses) in power and the White people(Noughts) as the slaves.
Personal Response
This book is about slavery and human rights with a twist. Instead of having the black people as slaves which is what happened in real life but they turned it around to give whites a feeling of what it was like for the ancestors of the black people who lived in the olden day. We see this when Callum who is a Nought boy who is dreaming about living in nice mansions like the Crosses but when he awakes into reality he says " I live in a three up, two down house", which looks like a shack representing his home. This links to a lot of countries that treat mostly middle east people like garbage and they don't give them equal rights as white people and they judge them on where they are from and what nationality they are instead of the person that they really are, just like the white people treated the black people in the cotton fields.
Noughts and Crosses shows us that the black people never had the same rights as the white people had. We see this when Callum gets excepted into a nice classy Cross school and on his first day he is attacked and bullied by all the Crosses because in their words they don't want a "animal" roaming around their school and they want him to go back to were he was from because he's not good enough to stay at the school, even the teachers didn't like the Nought student. We see this when Sephy who is friends with Callum tries to go eat with him and gets food thrown at her by the students and one of the teachers grabs her by the arm and pulls her away from the table before giving he a punishment. This links to American people that think that any middle eastern person is a terrorist and that they think that any middle eastern person in a school is planning an attack.

Title: No Good
Author: Helen Orme
Text Type: Short Story
Date Finished: 4/8/17
Summary
No good is based on a girl named Marie who is constantly bet up by her boyfriend Jay who is suspected to be a constant user of drugs.
Personal Response
The book started out about a normal family living in a normal neighbourhood before it took a dark turn. The book started off about a young girl named Marie and her family that was until they mentioned the boyfriend whose name was Jay. The Author portrayed Jay as a bully who likes to use his strength and power to rule his partner. We see this when he does not allow Marie to go see her old friends cause he fears that she might expose him for the monster that he truly is and he's worried that he is losing his power over her. The Author has linked this to the modern day world because this is happening all over the world but is a big factor with the gangs because they force these girls to do stuff that they normally wouldn't do but they are to scared to speak up about it or are on drugs and do not know what is happening.
The effects of drugs and/or alcohol can effect not only the user but the people close to the user. In this case where Marie gets effected by Jays use of alcohol because she is being forced into doing things and she is being held captive in her own life not being able to go out anywhere or even mail people online. This is seen when Jay goes as far as killing on of Marie's friends because he does not want her hanging out with him because he fears that she would spill his secret about how he bets her up. This shows us that Jay is a really dangerous person in the community and is willing to do anything to keep his secret untold to anyone. This links to a lot of communities in the modern day era with a rise of violence caused by people trying to get money for drugs or alcohol or they are high on drugs/ drunk on alcohol.
